Presentations

Jan Willem Coebergh was invited by the Slovenian Presidency of the EU, i.e. the Ministry of Health to present some EUROCADET results at the European conference near Ljubljana, Slovenia on February 7, 2008. His presentation was entitled 'the Burden of Cancer - How can it be reduced?" (see also http://www.projectfact.eu ) in a special session on Primary prevention and Health Promotion: From vertical to horizontal. The session was attended by 50-100 participants of whom several showed interest in attending Prevent workshops in the second half of 2008.
The aim of the conference of about 250 stakeholders from all EU member states was to emphasize the main issues in Cancer Control in Europe, i.e.

  • primary prevention (more or less relevant for all major chronic diseases)
  • mass screening
  • adequate coverage of cancer registries that are also able to monitor quality of care
  • development of cancer plans
  • coordination of cancer research, be it epidemiological, clinical, translational or fundamental.
An interesting book was presented "Responding to the challenge of cancer in Europe" (eds. MP Coleman, D-M Alexe, T. Albreht, M McKee) by the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, arising from the project fact: (Fighting Against Cancer Today), with funding from the Public Health Program of the EU. (to be obtained at the Institute of Public Health of the republic of Slovenia in Ljubljana)
